Why I Became a Sleep Consultant: My Journey from Nanny to Sleep Expert
From as early as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to work with children. There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping shape the lives of little ones, ensuring they receive the best care possible. This passion led me to discover Norland College, renowned for its comprehensive training for nannies. The moment I learned about it, I knew that was where I needed to be. My journey as a nanny began there, and it shaped the next 16 years of my life.
During my time as a nanny, I travelled the world, working with numerous families and caring for their children. One of the most common challenges I encountered was helping little ones establish healthy sleep routines. It became apparent just how crucial sleep is—not only for the children but for the entire family. A good sleep routine can be the difference between a peaceful night and a restless one, and as a nanny working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., I knew how important it was to get it right.
Sleep wasn’t just a routine aspect of my job; it became a central focus. No parent wants their nanny to set up a sleep schedule that results in their child waking up multiple times in the night. The pressure to ensure the children I cared for were well-rested and happy was immense, and I took it very seriously.
Nearly five years ago, I welcomed my own daughter into the world. My experience with sleep routines became even more personal. I was acutely aware of how much sleep she needed, and I was determined to create a routine that suited her needs. However, when I returned to work when she was just 12 weeks old, I quickly realised that the conventional baby routine books didn’t fit my life. With a 6 a.m. start time, I had to craft a routine that worked for both my daughter and my nanny children.
This challenge led me to develop a deep understanding of how sleep routines can be flexible yet effective. It became clear that one size does not fit all when it comes to sleep, and every family’s needs are different. When my last nanny position ended, I knew I wanted to continue working with families, but in a way that allowed me to focus on this critical aspect of childcare. That’s when I decided to become a certified sleep consultant.
As a sleep consultant, my mission is to support as many families as possible in achieving better sleep. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I take the time to understand your family’s unique dynamics and create a personalised sleep plan that fits your specific needs. Whether it’s adjusting routines to fit your lifestyle or addressing sleep challenges, my goal is to ensure that everyone gets the rest they deserve.
